The death toll so far in the Russian invasion of Ukraine is at least 198, according to the Ukrainian health ministry. Three children are among those dead. The ministry’s head was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying 1,115 people had been injured, including 33 children.

Russia now has at least 50% of its invasion force inside Ukraine but is making slow progress due to unexpectedly stiff resistance, a senior US defence official has said. The official said that the Russian military had still not taken control of any Ukraine city, nor has it gained air superiority over the country, and the US had “indications that the Russians are increasingly frustrated by their lack of momentum over the last 24 hours.”

Russia’s communications regulator has ordered independent media to remove reports describing Moscow’s attack on Ukraine as an “assault, invasion, or declaration of war” or face being blocked and fined. It accused a number of outlets of spreading “unreliable socially significant untrue information” about the shelling of Ukrainian cities by the Russian army and civilian deaths.

In perhaps the most striking development, Germany announced on Saturday night that it would supply Ukrainian troops with 1,000 anti-tank weapons as well as 500 Stinger missiles from its own military reserves.

“The Russian assault on Ukraine marks a turning point,” Germany’s chancellor, Olaf Scholz, said, signalling a major shift in his country’s postwar military stance. “It threatens our entire postwar order. In this situation it is our duty to support Ukraine to the best of our ability in its defence against the invasive army of Vladimir Putin. Germany stands closely on the side of Ukraine.”

In further blows to Putin, Hungary’s leader, Viktor Orbán, long seen as friendly towards Moscow, abandoned his support, saying he would back all EU sanctions against Russia, while Turkey was reported to be considering blocking the passage of Russian naval vessels into the Black Sea.

Having held off Russian forces for two nights, morale in Kyiv remained high among Ukrainians of all ages and from all walks of life, as many queued to take up arms. Many also gleefully shared videos of unarmed civilians rushing into the road to stop advancing convoys and fearlessly berating Russian soldiers about why they had come to Ukraine. Around the country, Russian forces were not confirmed as having control of a single major city, while Zelenskiy remained in Kyiv and told Americans who offered to evacuate him: “The fight is here. I need ammunition, not a ride.”

In London, the Ministry of Defence announced that Challenger 2 tanks and armoured vehicles from the Royal Welsh Battlegroup had arrived in Estonia from Germany, with further equipment and about 1,000 troops following over the coming days.

The defence secretary, Ben Wallace, said the aim was to stop invasions of Nato member states: “Alongside our Nato allies, these deployments constitute a credible deterrent to stop Russian aggression threatening the territorial sovereignty of member states.”

On Saturday, Russian advances on major cities, including Kyiv, appeared to have slowed or ground to a halt. Ukraine’s defence ministry claimed Russia had suffered more than 3,000 casualties and that many other soldiers had been captured.

UK and other diplomats said a decision by China to abstain rather than back its ally Russia in a UN resolution on the invasion was being viewed as a huge victory for the west. Beijing called on both Moscow and Kyiv to find a negotiated settlement.

In the cases of both Eastern Ukraine and Crimea, Beijing has emphasized the complex historical factors and realties, a move that appears to place the responsibilities on both sides. If Crimea serves as a precedent, China will remain silent on the issues of sovereignty and territorial integrity, which in reality translates into a tacit recognition of the altered status quo without publicly stating so.

There are several nuanced differences in China’s position this time around, however. The first is the Foreign Ministry’s statement that all countries’ reasonable security concerns deserve to be respected. In line with China’s balancing act, such a statement applies to Ukraine’s security concern with a Russian invasion, as well as Russian security concerns over the expansion of NATO.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi had publicly stated that all countries’ sovereignty and territorial integrity should be protected—Ukraine included. That is widely regarded as the most clearcut position China has delivered on a Russian invasion during this crisis.

However, Wang’s statement should be assessed together with the qualifier that he added: that the result in Ukraine today is the consequence of the failure to implement the Minsk II Agreement. But that failure itself is the “Minsk Conundrum,” for which China views both parties as responsible.

Last but not least, China claims that it will decide its position according to the merits of the matter itself, a clear move to refute speculations that China will side with Russia based on the joint statement Putin and Xi issued earlier this month in Beijing about Sino-Russia relations having “no limit.”

The most direct reaction on the morning of February 22 in the Chinese policy community was a sense of shock. Having subscribed to the theory that Putin was only posturing and that US intelligence was inaccurate as in the case of invading Iraq, the Chinese were not anticipating a real invasion by Russia.

For the Chinese, Putin’s brinksmanship had achieved his goals of forcing the US and Europe back to the negotiation table, driving a wedge between NATO allies, inflating energy prices, and deterring NATO expansion, and, therefore, there was no need to follow through at the risk of severe sanctions.

As Beijing does not feel it should be either responsible or affected by Russia’s actions in its east, the Chinese were observing the situation in Ukraine with interest but from afar. The joint statement with Russia is another example of how China failed to anticipate Putin’s actions.

Had Beijing expected Putin to invade Ukraine two weeks after, it would have been more careful about its close alignment and commitment that tie Beijing to Putin’s chariot.

Although plenty of Chinese pundits feel played by Russia, their bitterness is diluted by perceived strategic benefits. At the minimum, China sees the Ukraine crisis as a useful distraction that will draw the US away from the Indo-Pacific and back to Europe and the Atlantic, alleviating the strategic pressure on China as the biggest national security threat to the US.

In this sense, China and Russia do not need to coordinate joint actions against the US, but their individual actions themselves could act as force multipliers —“divide and conquer.”

The US may not be able to force China to change its position and oppose Russia publicly and decisively. After all, the Chinese do not see an incentive in cooperating with the US to punish Russia as US strategy toward China appears unmalleable, providing little reward if China were to aid the US on Ukraine.

If there is no reward, the cost of China’s choice is what’s left to alter its perceived payoff. While Beijing wants to exploit the strategic benefits of the Russian activities, it will recalculate if the cost is so high that it becomes untenable.

Some Chinese have had the wrong impression and illusions that there are no more effective economic sanctions the US can apply after the past few years of the trade war. This view needs to be corrected. As Russia’s largest trading partner, China has significant trade and financial ties with Russia that will be vulnerable to US sanctions.

This is particularly true given the central role state-owned actors play in bilateral trade relations, such as the Chinese oil companies in the energy trade.

The German psychoanalyst Erich Fromm, in his great study of the Nazi mind, described how for the Nazis claiming they were victims was really a way to excuse how they would victimise others. It’s the same for Putin. His regime is, on the surface, nothing like the Nazis. Russia has its own totalitarian traditions to tap into. But the underlying mindset is the same.

     *

Henry Dicks, the psychoanalyst who studied Nazi soldiers during the second world war, came to the conclusion that Hitler’s idea of Lebensraum, the land (much of it in Ukraine) Germans claimed belonged to them, was not just a geopolitical idea but a sign of a psychology that was so steeped in humiliation it grabbed things outside itself to sate its sense of endless inadequacy. Like an angry infant that doesn’t understand its own borders, grabbing things beyond it and screaming “mine!” This is the endless cycle in these regimes: a culture of humiliation; a sense of inadequacy; aggression.

But let’s not over-focus on the Nazis – that always makes us feel good because we fought them. Putin reminds us of the worst about ourselves as well. The day the invasion launched, at the UN, it was the representatives from Kenya and Ghana who grasped the meaning of what was going on the quickest, comparing Ukraine to their own colonial legacy. “We must complete our recovery from the embers of dead empires in a way that does not plunge us back into new forms of domination and oppression,” said Kenya’s permanent representative.

It might be comforting to think of Putin as merely a throwback to the past – but his ambition is for his worldview to dominate the future, and his mindset to be normalised.

Today this is all focused on one place: Ukraine. Which Putin is invading, bombing, murdering with impunity. He claims Ukrainians don’t exist as an independent people – so it’s OK to murder them. His plan is to install a puppet government and then execute any dissidents. But Ukrainians aren’t puppets. Ukrainians very much exist. This is the great achilles heel in Putin’s worldview. He is the arch conspiracy theorist: and for conspiracy theorists people are all puppets, moved around great chess boards. He doesn’t understand that people have volition.

I cannot leave him. There were several other Belarusians on the bus with us, who also had nowhere to go. There is no free transport, no way back to Kyiv, and we may not be allowed into Poland. We are also unlikely to be able to reach Moldova. We have almost nothing with us.

I wrote this diary entry while all of this was going on. I made sure that I was settled and secretly took four more people to my single room, which has no hot water. I hope no one finds out.
